Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, Southern, CO

Updated: Dec 24, 2021

September 2020 I had the opportunity to catch up with some friends by meeting someplace in the middle of Santa Fe and Boulder. Turns out we chose

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. What a choice!

Although, our visit was short, Bruno, Kyle and I had dinner out and coffee the next morning at the dunes for sunrise, You will see some pics from that morning.

The rest of the pics are from the two hikes Layla and I did on those two days.

Day 1; Mosca Pass Trail, 6.4 miles with 1460 feet of elevation gain. Beautiful sunny day. Warm with great views.

Day 2; I believe to be Dunes Overlook Trail. When the guys left, Layla and I hit the trail. It was a pretty mellow trail with wonderful views to a shaded vista with a bench to hang and relax to take it all in. These pics start near the base of the dune after the pics of Layla laying by our bags and my blue Nalgene.

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is in southern Colorado. It’s known for huge dunes like the towering Star Dune, and for the seasonal Medano Creek and beach created at the base of the dunes. The backcountry Medano Pass Primitive Road winds through a canyon toward the Sangre de Cristo mountains. Trails lead to forests, wetlands and alpine lakes like Medano Lake, which is home to trout and tundra wildlife. ― Google
